If there’s one thing I ’ve learned about being a photographer, it’s the importance of educating my brides! Can you think of a time where you walked into a hardware store, or into a meeting with a contractor for your house remodel or even just planning a wedding and had no idea where to go, which paint colors to use or who to reach out to? But then someone with experience came to the rescue and guided you, giving unbiased advice to help you succeed? I hope to give my brides that experience, to help educate them and give them unbiased advice.
Now imagine this: You’re a new bride-to-be, planning out your dream wedding. You’re selecting the venue, your colors and your wedding style. You’re ready to design your invitations but with the countless styles, themes, and colors, you become easily overwhelmed. Here are some tips for selecting your invitations that relates to your wedding style and easily translates for your guests.
Font:
You can learn a lot about a font beyond just what the words are saying. Take a look at the font on the invitations and observe if it is calligraphy or if it’s informal. The themes that come to mind when I see calligraphy are elegant, classic, black tie, etc. So in turn – that translates to me as a formal dress with heels. Or if the font is more informal I typically think of a very casual setting or rustic venue (barn, outdoor lawn ceremony, etc.) with dark jeans/khakis for men, summer sundresses, and flats. (The font is not always the #1 way to determine the style of a wedding, but use it as a guideline).
You could even say that your font style should match your wedding theme so that they are also consistent. For example, a burlap ballroom wedding can send a mixed message. A guest might think, “Is it informal or formal? Do I need to wear a sundress and flats or does it required a floor-length formal gown?” Maybe consider saving a burlap table runner for a barn wedding and using chandeliers and tall candelabras for a ballroom layout! Again, there is no right and wrong way to plan and design your wedding day! I’m just using these two themes as an example!

Colors:
You know the million dollar question that you get asked over and over, “What are your colors?”. Keep in mind your color scheme when designing your wedding invitations and apply those colors to your invitations. For example, maybe consider using a gold foil to your font if you’re having a lot of gold decor at the reception. You could also add a floral border if your wedding theme is heavily decorated with flowers. Not only does color consistency complement your wedding day but it also gives your guests an idea of which colors to avoid matching the bridesmaids!
Venue:
The last trick for your guests is to Google the venue to understand whether the wedding is formal or informal. This should also help guide their outfit decisions in preparing for the wedding! If you’re planning an outdoor ceremony during a “winter” month, help your guests come prepared by adding it to the invitation!
